Recommended Free Filtering Programs
While Kaysville South Stake does not promote or endorse the purchase of any particular filtering software, we strongly encourage you to acquire and install device-level filtering software on the computers you use. There are several good web filtering applications available - even some that are free. The information below is provided to help you decide which one best meets your needs.
To protect a single computer (PC or Mac):
K9 is a great, free filtering package that works on both PCs and Macs: http://www1.k9webprotection.com/index.php
Documentation: http://www1.k9webprotection.com/getk9/documentation
From the K9 home page, you will need to click ”DOWNLOAD FOR FREE”. Follow the instructions, using your name and email address to sign up. A license key will be emailed to you, along with a link to download the software. Be sure to choose the correct software for your operating system. (Windows 64-bit for Vista/7, Windows 32-bit for XP/Vista/7, or Mac OSX)
When installing, the software will prompt you for an admin password. Be sure to record the password you use – this is very important. After the setup is done, you will possibly be prompted to restart your computer. Afterward, you should access the K9 Web Protection configuration, administration, and reporting functionality pages: you must log in to the application with the administrator password you specified during the installation process.
1. Start K9 Web Protection:
a. Windows: Click Start -> [All] Programs -> Blue Coat K9 Web Protection -> Blue Coat K9 Web Protection admin
b. Mac: In the Finder, click Applications -> K9 Web Protection (in other words, go to /Applications/K9 Web Protection/) and double-click Configure K9 Web Protection.
c. K9 Web Protection starts in a Web browser window.
2. Clicking either View Internet Activity or Setup in the top menu bar displays the Administrator Login prompt.
3. At the prompt, enter the administrator password that you created during the installation and press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac).
a. Note: If you forget your password, click the Forgot your password? link. A temporary password is sent to the e-mail address you used when you registered your K9 Web Protection application.
To protect a network (with your router):
OpenDNS is a free service that allows you to route all your incoming internet traffic through 3rd party servers.

This link will take you to the start page of OpenDNS where you can set up your router. After creating an account, you will be prompted to choose the brand of router and then follow the directions to set up your router protection. There is also a step-by-step video tutorial link that will help you if you need more help. Make sure that your router has a password on it to keep others from changing your settings.
